In our psychological thriller it becomes clear the character is worried about her appearance as she re-applies her makeup. This is projected from The Stepfather's title sequence when the stepfather is trimming his beard. These seem wrong in a thriller as they are "every day" activities and do not fit in well with the theme of the movie. That makes the character seem mysterious.
Dead Line and Se7en (1995)
Both Dead Line and Se7en begin with shots of the hands which may seem unusual to the viewer. The activities also may trigger a feeling of tension in the viewers, taking a tablet and putting a needle through a thread may seem normal but in a psychological thriller movie they can't be good news. Both these shots show there is something abnormal about the characters.
